- Additional information
This dried unspread butterfly is Charaxes subornatus, the Ornate Green Charaxes, and is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family. It is found in the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya. Its habitat consists of evergreen forests. The Ornate Green Charaxes is known for its pale sage green coloring that allows it to camouflage perfectly in its habitat.
Butterflies are part of the class of insects in the order Lepidoptera, along with moths. Adult butterflies have large, often brightly colored wings, and conspicuous, fluttering flight. Butterfly fossils date to the Palaeocene era, about 56 million years ago. Butterflies are often polymorphic, and many species make use of camouflage, mimicry and aposematism to evade their predators. Some, like the monarch and the painted lady, migrate over long distances.
**Please keep in mind that these specimens are dried and unspread (as shown), meaning the wings are closed. These specimens are useful if you want to use their wings only (for artwork, fairy dolls, jewelry) or simply to study them for science.
In order to spread butterflies for mounting and display, simply search online on how to hydrate the butterflies to spread their wings. Mounted butterflies are often used in insect mosaics which make beautiful and unique pieces of art.
