- Additional information
Heliotrope, sometimes referred to as bloodstone or plasma, is a form of chalcedony. Chalcedony is when a cryptocrystalline mixture of quartz and its monoclinic polymorph moganite. Heliotrope is sometimes used in carved signet rings and is the traditional birthstone for March. The “classic” bloodstone is green chalcedony with red inclusions of iron oxide or red jasper. The red inclusions are supposed to resemble spots of blood, which is where it derives its name. There is a legend that says the bloodstone was formed from the blood of Christ dripping on the green earth and solidifying. Sometimes the inclusions are yellow, and is then referred to as plasma.
The bloodstone has been used as an amulet to protect against the evil eye in the metaphysical world. Bloodstone is known as a stone of courage. It improves physical strength, enhances self-esteem, and soothes anxiety. The bloodstone also fights evil and prevents jealousy by mending a broken heart and bringing good fortune.
Please keep in mind that because these are natural specimens, variations in color, shapes and sizes are to be expected.
